The charming village of Contra is part of the district of Locarno and lies on a hilly area bordered by the valley landscape. With a population of around 3,000, it is a popular destination for both permanent and holiday residents. On the plain, the main municipality of Tenero is a touristic attraction and an important industrial centre with several companies and shopping centres.

The geography of valley, plain and lake has also made it attractive on a sporting level, in particular with the nationally recognised Centro Sportivo Tenero (CST).
